About New Farm
New Farm is an inner suburban region in the Brisbane city, located a couple of km towards the east of Brisbane Central Business District, on the edges of the River. It is accessible by land via north through Newstead and from the north-west through Fortitude Valley. It is renowned as the Little Italy of Brisbane with gourmet treats in cafes, Queenslander houses and enclave of tree-lined streets. It is known to be one of the oldest precincts in the city, with rich arts scene adding to the beauty of the place.
New Farm Park
This heritage-listed public park in New Farm, Brisbane, was built from the year 1914 to 1950, and was designed by Albert Herbert Foster. In February 2005, it was added to the Queensland Heritage Register. The park covers an area of 37 acres, with an ideal location on a bend in the river, at the south-east end of the New Farm peninsula. It also adjoins the Brisbane Powerhouse.
Before European settlement, the New Farm region was dotted with shallow lagoons and covered with bush. It used to be a thriving ground for local Aborigines and a variety of wildlife. It was known to be a place of land tortoise, called Binkin-ba. The property on which the park stands was originally a farm. In the year 1846, a racecourse was built on it, until the land was acquired by the Brisbane City Council.
Brunswick Street
The main thoroughfare within the suburbs of Fortitude Valley and New Farm, the Brunswick Street is not just a roadway, but a pedestrian mall as well. It is a popular nightclub zone in the city, having many clubs and bars, along with a chain of restaurants. The Valley Mall has expanded with new clubs such as Monastery and GPO, Family, Cloudland and Planet, X&Y, Alleoneword and The Met. The heritage listed Son Store and Corbett Store were built along the street, which is also used for Queensland Pride March.
Brisbane Powerhouse
Located in a former power station in the New Farm suburb, this art and cultural hub offers a wide array of free community events, festivals, visual arts and performing arts. It was in 1927, when the first stage of powerhouse was built, with the growing requirement of powerhouses for Brisbane Trams. It began operating in 1928, and was re-opened as an entertainment venue in 2000. The building is divided into three parts, the turbine room, the switch house and the boiler house. The whole building remained intact, apart from demolition of Boiler Room in 1984. The building was constructed in stages, from load bearing masonry.
Currently, the powerhouse is a multipurpose arts centre, with a 536-seater Powerhouse Theatre, restaurant, bar, rooftop terrace, green spaces, outdoor pizza, Turbine Hall, the 536-seat Powerhouse Theatre and the 200-seat Visy Theatre. The theatres can be configured in different styles, providing more space as needed.
